Transfer music from one iPhone, iPod or iPad to another

You may have music on one iOS device that you want to transfer to another device. For example, you may have some music on your iPhone that you'd like to have on your iPad. If you don't want to sync with iTunes - or if you can't, because you don't have immediate access to the computer that's linked to these devices' libraries - iMazing can help.

While you can't copy your music or other data directly from one device to another, you can use iMazing to transfer your data from an iOS device to a computer's folder or iTunes library, then copy it to another device from the computer's folder or iTunes library.

There's a difference in these two method: If you transfer music by exporting it to a computer's folder, you'll only be able to copy the media files. But if you export to iTunes library, then import from iTunes library to another device, you'll retain all your metadata: ratings, play counts, and more. Here's how to do this.

Before you begin

Download and install iMazing on your Mac or PC computer.

Here's how to transfer music from one iOS device to another, via a computer's folder:

  1. Launch iMazing and connect your device to your Mac or PC.
  2. Follow the instructions in Transfer music from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod to your Mac or PC computer to copy your music files to a folder on your Mac or PC.
  3. Disconnect the first device, then connect the second device.
  4. Follow the instructions in Transfer music from a computer to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to copy your music files from the folder on your Mac or PC to the second iOS device.

Here's how to transfer music from one iOS device to another, via iTunes library:**

  1. Launch iMazing and connect your device to your Mac or PC.
  2. Follow the instructions in Transfer music from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod to iTunes to copy your music files to iTunes on your Mac or PC.
  3. Disconnect the first device, then connect the second device.
  4. Follow the instructions in Transfer music from iTunes to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to copy your music files from iTunes on your Mac or PC to the second iOS device.

Going further

If you check Only Show Transferable Media when copying your music files to your computer or to iTunes, just above the toolbar, iMazing only shows those files it can copy. If you uncheck this option, any files that iMazing cannot transfer display greyed out.

There are two reasons why iMazing may not be able to copy files:

  • Apple Music tracks are a special kind of file that cannot be copied to a computer or to another device.
  • iCloud Music tracks that aren't downloaded cannot be copied, because they are not on your device. If you do want to export music that's in your iCloud Music Library, download it first to your device.
